Characteristics of Effective Learning

                                                                                                            OUR ACHIEVOSAUR GANG

Characteristics of Effective Learning describe the behaviours that children use in order to learn. Children who are curious, enthusiastic and motivated will approach learning opportunities with confidence and energy.

At Hoyle, we use a special set of dinosaurs called 'Achievosaurs' to help the children understand the different ways that they and their friends are learning. Each of the characteristics is represented by a different dinosaur character.

These Characteristics of Effective Learning are what help to inform our practice. Our children learn best when they are enjoying themselves and when they feel safe and valued. All our areas of continuous provision both indoors and out are enhanced regularly with exciting and stimulating resources to encourage curiosity and independence. We work hard to create an environment which is rich in learning and fun.

The three main Characteristics are:

  • Playing and Exploring - children investigate and experience things, and have a 'go'
  • Active Learning - children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements.
  • Creating and Thinking Critically - children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas and develop strategies for doing things.

Tell me and I forget.

Teach me and I remember.

Involve me and I learn.
